My Journey With Diabetes

Welcome to Working With Diabetes.

I was first diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2000 (aged 30).  This followed a 5 year period where I gained weight from 75kg to 114kg.  During this time I exhibited the classic symptoms of an early diabetic; thirst, tingling feet and fingers, blurred vision, headaches, increased itching and episodes which I later realised were ‘Hypers‘.

During the first 10 years I didn’t take my condition as seriously as I should, as a result, I now have mild neuropathy and have experienced significant complications as a result of sepsis and foot ulcers complicated by my diabetes.  Over the last 10 years my self-care has improved significantly, my complications have remained stable for the past 5 years as a direct result, but it takes a daily routine of testing, injections, exercise and being as in control of my food intake as I can to keep my diabetes from ruling my life at home and work.

I have been very fortunate during this time that my employers have been supportive and positive towards me and other employees with diabetes and I have received great care from the NHS.  During this time I have met many people who have shared a wide range of experiences ranging from the irritation of colleagues who don’t understand the (simple) needs we have to downright discrimination.  I have built Working with Diabetes to support people in any workplace setting with advice, tools, support and a network to normalise the experience of diabetics in the workplace.  It is focussed on UK legislation but is valuable to anyone.

This is a non-profit making venture, though I do make modest revenues from advertising and sponsorship to cover the costs of running the site; hosting, software licences, travel to awareness raising interviews, etc.  All surpluses are re-invested into the following;

  • 20% :: Annual donation to Diabetes UK.
  • 40% :: Paying for writers and content to improve the resources available on the site.
  • 40% :: Raising awareness of the site via Google/LinkedIn advertising and other promotional campaigns.

If you are interested in sponsoring or endorsing Working With Diabetes please contact me, or call me on 07801 136839.

If you have any feedback at all, please contact me and feel free to share Working With Diabetes with your colleagues and networks.

Best wishes
